After gaining fame from his many hits like ‘The Shack,’ ‘Something Like That,’ and more he started acting but James Dillard Dutton in 1883 was his first significant role. He initially played this character in season 4 of Yellowstone in the flashback scenes, which eventually led to the opportunity to expand the role in the prequel.
On Sheridan’s call to offer him the part, he was intrigued on his terms. McGraw said, “Certainly I was interested in it, but I told him I didn’t want to be some singing cowboy that just comes to the bunkhouse and gets carried to the train station at the end of the episode. If he came up with something that was interesting, I’d be glad to do it.”
2. Faith Hill as Margaret Dutton
Faith Hill joined the series at the same time as her husband, playing his character’s wife, Margaret Dutton. Mrs. Hill too is a country music star with a bunch of fans who were thrilled to see her in the show. Born and raised in Mississippi, Hill moved to Nashville at the age of 19. In 2022, she said that filming 1883 was a rewarding experience.
She said about her character, ”The authenticity was exciting for me. I understood why learning how to do these things properly really mattered, when you’re actually in the midst of filming on a horse, on a wagon, shooting the guns, all the things that we had fun training to do.”
3. Isabel May as Elsa Dutton
Isabel May played Elsa Dutton, daughter of James and Margaret Dutton and the narrator of the follow-up Yellowstone series 1923. Her first role as a recurring character was on The Big Bang Theory prequel Young Sheldon before becoming a lead on the Netflix series Alex & Katie.
May started acting in 2018 and starred in a handful of wonderful films before entering the Western dramas. The actress said that she had originally auditioned for another role in the series 1883, but things worked in her favour and ended up being unpredictable to her.
4. Sam Elliott as Shea Brennan
Sam Elliott was born in California and raised in Oregon before embarking on a long career in Hollywood. His first credited works were as Robert Redfort in ‘Butch Cassidy’ and Paul Newman in ‘The Sundance Kid.’ In the decades since Elliot earned the first Oscar nomination as Best Supporting Actor for his work in ‘A Star Is Born’ in 2019. Elliot said that his role as Shea Brennan on 1883 was influenced by his history in Westerns, though he admits it was a different experience. As all viewers know, his character was a Civil War veteran turned cowboy who helped the Duttons on their journey. “It wasn’t a big stretch for me, because I was so familiar with the genre,” he said.
5. Eric Nelsen as Ennis
Eric Nelsen starred as Ennis, a cowboy who assisted the Dutton family on their journey alongside Shea Brennan. His character was Elsa Dutton’s love interest but dies from a shotgun wound. Nelsen’s resume is a lengthy one, starting from Sensing Murder as a teenager to the soap opera All My Children, Showtime’s The Affair and then 1883.
6. Martin Sensmeier as Sam
Martin Sensmeier charmed both audiences and Elsa Dutton as Sam, helping out the Dutton family on their journey. Sensmeier previously worked with Sheridan on Wind River and other appearances in HBO’s Westworld, NBC’s La Brea, etc.
7. Dawn Olivieri as Claire Dutton
