The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Monday authorized the use of the Covid-19 vaccine by Pfizer / BioNTech in adolescents aged 12 to 15 years. Until now, the application of the immunizer was allowed only in people aged 16 and over.
“Today’s action allows a younger population to be protected from Covid-19, bringing us closer to a return to normality and to the end of the pandemic,” said the acting commissioner of the FDA Janet Woodcock in a statement. According to the authority, a rigorous and comprehensive review of all available data on the vaccine has been carried out. The evaluation concluded that the benefits of the immunizer for people 12 years of age and older outweigh the risks associated with the application of the product.
“Having a vaccine licensed for a younger population is a critical step in continuing to reduce the immense public health burden caused by the Covid-19 pandemic,” said Peter Marks, director of the Biologics Assessment Center at the FDA.
