Uruguay announced this Saturday (17) the arrival in the country of the delta and beta variants of the coronavirus, in addition to having recorded for the second time the alpha and lambda strains, after 86 samples were analyzed. The information was disclosed by the Minister of Public Health, Daniel Salinas, during a conference also attended by representatives of the Interinstitutional Working Group (GTI), the Pasteur Institute of Montevideo and the University of the Republic (UdelaR).
Salinas stressed the importance of a full vaccination, as most of these cases have occurred in people who had only received a single dose of the coronavirus vaccine or had not been vaccinated. “We knew that these variants were going to come in, these 86 people entered our country between June 25 and July 15. The important thing is to know that the situation is under control and closely watched,” he said. .
Uruguay currently has 378,733 positive cases for Covid-19, of which 4,887 are active, with 127 patients in intensive care unit. The death toll reached 5,879. One of the strengths of the South American country is its high level of immunization, as 415,313 people were vaccinated with the first dose, while 2,048,449 (57.82% of the population) have already completed the immunization schedule.
