Windows 11 has been a series of interesting improvements for the user, but among all the changes there is one that has not been particularly positive. The taskbar has lost the ability to drag and drop, an option that can be recovered with this free app.

An application downloadable from Github, which is open source and which gives the user the possibility to drag files to applications which are not open in the taskbar, which they open automatically and thus save valuable seconds.

Free and open source

One of the lost features of Windows 11 is the option that lets you drag and drop files to programs whose icons are on the taskbar. A feature present since Windows 7, widely used, but removed with the arrival of Windows 11.

If you are used to this action, the “Drag & Drop to the Taskbar” tool, available on Github, allows you to recover a large part of the functionality. It is an application that installs and recovers lost capacity of Windows.

Without being portable, it is a lightweight tool that does not add DLL files or change any system registry keys except for autostart when manually configured.

The form works in such a way that when you drag something to the taskbar it waits a few milliseconds to see if the action is valid and simulates the key combination Win + T. A key combination used to switch between them. windows of a program in the taskbar and which in this case is used to open files.

For the moment and as mentioned in GHacks, the tool does not allow to create shortcuts to the taskbar and according to the developers “this function is not worked”.
