UPDATED: Pinehills hotel leaps another hurdle

The Planning Board gave its blessing to plans for a 50-room hotel of Landmark Drive at the Pinehills. Gary Dower, principal of the Mirbeau Inn and Spa in Skaneateles, N.Y. outlined plans for the project and touted his company’s success.  Plymouth has “fabulous amenities” and is well-situated between Providence and Boston to host a destination resort. OBITUARY: Mark Gilmartin, 74, veteran, enjoyed fishing and gardening

Mark J. Gilmartin, 74, died unexpectedly at Jordan Hospital, September 18. He was the beloved husband of Sally J. (Harlow) Gilmartin of Plymouth, the father of Mark Gilmartin of New Market, Maryland, Peter Gilmartin of Easton, Kent Gilmartin of Sand Springs, Oklahoma and Erica Lunn of Coatesville, Pennsylvania. He also leaves sisters Ellen Smithson of Halifax, and Sally Nelson of Carver, five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Mark was born in Rockland the son of Peter and Hilda (Chase) Gilmartin. He graduated from Rockland High School and served two years in the U.S. Army. Continue Reading →

UPDATED: Suspect charged in church fire

Henry Mahon, 19, of Long Pond Road, who had been described as a “person of interest” in the fire set at Saint Bonaventure Church has been charged with arson, according to police records. At his second court hearing in as many days, the judge granted both a prosecution motion for a a dangerousness hearing and a defense motion for a competency hearing. Mahon will be evaluated for 20 days at Bridgewater State Hospital. Mahon had been released on his own recognizance after being arrainged on stolen property charges Thursday, but was quickly re-arrested after police found forensic evidence allegedly linking Mahon to the fire, according to Capt. John Rogers. He declined to to provide details on either the evidence or Mahon's possible motive. Continue Reading →

UPDATED: Hotel project, dormant for a decade, may return to Pinehills

Artist's rendering of proposed hotel and spa for the Pinehills. A decade after plans for a Pinehills hotel fell through, a developer is trying again. Tuesday, the Board of Selectmen approved a tax increment finance agreement to assist the construction of a 50 room hotel off Landmark Drive. Town Meeting will get the final say in October. Manomet Center gets state grant

The Manomet Center for Conservation received a $26,600 grant from the Massachusetts Cultural Council, Senator Therese Murray’s office announced. According to Dave McGlinchey, Director of Communications and Marketing for the center, the money is an annual grant which will be used for outreach programs, including its publications and website. Sign ups underway for Plymouth Girls Basketball League

Registration for the  Plymouth Girls Basketball League 2012-2013 season is now open. The PGBL is Plymouth's only all girl basketball league with 4 divisions from grades 2 to 8. This year there is a new Instructional Division  for 1st and 2nd grade girls which focuses on teaching the fundamentals of the game and basic basketball skills. 

Girls in the competitive divisions (Grade 4 to 8) have one practice and one game each week.  The league also sponsors travel teams for 5th to 8th grade girls. League play begins in December and registration covers a game shirt for each player. Continue Reading →

Plymouth Moose holding golf benefit for wounded warriors

The Plymouth Moose will hold a golf tournament to benefit wounded veterans on Sunday, October. 7, at the Crosswinds Golf Course in Plymouth. The cost is $85 per golfer for greens fee, cart, sandwich and soda on the course. The tournament format is a scramble format with a shotgun start at 9:30 a.m. An awards dinner immediately follows at the Plymouth Moose Lodge, 601 State Road, Plymouth. Manomet woman arrested for assault

A Kennedy Parkway woman was arrested after getting into a fight with her boyfriend, Saturday morning. According to Capt. John Rogers, Jennifer Peoples, 36, threatened the alleged victim  with a knife. She also broke two windows. Peoples, who lives at the address where the incident took place, was charged with assault with a dangerous weapon and malicious destruction of property over $250. She was held on $1,000 bail. Thursday Break-ins plague Plymouth

Plymouth police responded to numerous burglary calls Thursday, including three in Manomet area. According to Capt. John Rogers, a caller on Reed Avenue East reported a past break-in in which items were taken from a small safe.  Oddly, the caller also reported a number of antiques and a diving knife had been taken from storage and left out in the open. There were also two burglaries on State Road. In one, the door was reported to have been kicked in and costume jewelry stolen. Continue Reading →
