Sparks fly at first meeting of Pilgrim Station decommissioning panel

The first meeting of the advisory panel charged  with advising the Governor and the Legislature on the decommissioning of Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station started snippy and ended sloppily. With 19 members appointed by a variety of state and local officials, there was certain to be some disagreement as the panel met Wednesday night at Plymouth South High School and it quickly showed during questioning of a presentation by Joe Lynch, Pilgrim’s manager of government affairs, on how the plant’s shutdown might proceed. Pilgrim Station to begin moving fuel to dry storage

Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station will begin moving spent fuel into dry cask storage this month. In a press release, the company announced it would begin loading three casks in a process that would be finished by the end of January. “Moving spent fuel into dry cask storage is needed to maintain sufficient room in the spent fuel pools to conduct refueling operations as needed,” the statement announced.  In December, 2013 PNPS Regulatory Affairs Director David Noyes said the plant’s spent fuel pool was at 80 percent capacity.
