A little piece of White Horse Beach catches eye of the Open Space Committee

The Open Space Committee is looking to protect a small piece of White Horse Beach that was once a favored spot for sea mossers. The plot of land is tiny, barely 1/5 of an acre. It came into the town’s possession a little under seven years ago after its owner failed to pay taxes on it. Now, the Open Space Committee wants the parcel transferred from the control of the Town Treasurer to the Conservation Commission. That would give the essentially unbuildable plot of beach even greater protection, Open Space Committee Chairman Betsy Hall told the Manomet Village Steering Committee last week. Continue Reading →

Environmentalists want voices heard on Pilgrim Station land

When it comes to the 1,500 acres of land that surrounds Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station, local environmentalists want to be heard. The Coalition to Preserve Natural Plymouth recently came before the Manomet Village Steering Committee to talk about their ambitions for the land. Cheryl Heller expressed the group’s concerns over the plan to run a hydroelectric cable onto the land and connect it to a substation on the property. Emera Inc., the company bidding for the power contract, already has an agreement to lease 52 acres of land from Entergy for the project. (more…) Continue Reading →

Insurance issues cited as reason for beach bath house delay

The White Horse Beach Bath House has been a long time coming, and it’s going to be longer still. Community Preservation Committee Chairman Bill Keohan gave the Manomet VIllage Steering Committee an update on the project’s status. Keohan explained that an unorthodox approach to designing the building has played a factor in the project’s delay. When Town Meeting approved the project in 2013, the article included  a provision to let the MVSC approve a design for the bath house with public input. Typically, building design is handled by the Building Committee, Keohan said. Continue Reading →

Wireless communications the topic at steering committee meeting

With the battle raging over a wireless communications tower just down the way on Center Hill Road, the Manomet Village Steering Committee is looking at how to respond if a similar proposal should happen here. As is often the case in these debates, the issues boiled down to the need for better coverage versus aesthetics. Opening Thursday night’s discussion, Chairman Randy Parker argued that the first question was whether people in Manomet have a problem with cell phone coverage. For Parker, that was a “yes,” as he noted that his reception varies throughout his own home. At one point, the discussion moved from suggestions about what he could do to improve his service to everyone in the room checking to see how many bars they had on their phones. Continue Reading →
