Manomet Center makes headquarters more accesible

On June 8, Manomet Inc. cut the ribbon on improvements to its main office and banding lab in that will make them more accessible to those with mobility needs. The changes, which cost  $250,000,included an ADA accessible bathroom, an automatic front door, and new indoor and outdoor classrooms.

Family day at the Manomet Center

Come visit Manomet’s Bird Banding Lab this June 3 for its biannual Family Day, when the doors will open to visitors  to witness live demonstrations of the bird research happening here. For over 50 years, the Landbird Conservation staff at Manomet has collected meticulous data every spring and fall, observing migration patterns of songbirds by catching, banding, and releasing them. The banding team operates the lab Monday through Friday from dawn until dusk, averaging around 2,000 birds caught each season, taking detailed notes and observations on each and every one. Manomet Center receives grant for forestry research

The Manomet Center’s Climate Services program was recently awarded a grant from The Sustainable Forestry Initiative Inc. 

 The grant will support Manomet’s development of the Resiliency Assessment Framework, a scalable approach for assessing forest resilience to climate change, demonstrating the adaptation and mitigation value of forestlands certified to SFI, and incorporating climate opportunities and risks in planning and management. Manomet Center gets federal grant to expand internship program

The Manomet Center has received a $91,000 grant from the US Environmental Protection Agency to expand its internship program. Called “U360,” the program gives students a chance to learn about climate change, energy, water, and toxins; practical tools for addressing these environmental issues; and how to apply this knowledge by helping small businesses improve their sustainability and reduce their environmental footprint, according to a press release. Manomet Center appoints new chief operating officer

The Manomet Center has promoted Constance de Brun to Chief Operating Officer / Chief Financial Officer. In her new role, de Brun is responsible for leading all internal operations at Manomet. The Manomet Center will host a course on basic bird biology at its headquarters on July 21, 2016. This course will utilize Manomet’s teaching collection to cover the basics of bird anatomy (i.e. bills and feathers), bird behavior, and life histories. Manomet Center breaks ground on accessibility project

Ground was broken last Thursday at the Manomet Center on a project to make the facility more handicapped accessible. Work on the project, which will make the center’s banding operation and visitor’s center accessible to all who come, will begin at the end of June. Know your warblers at the Manomet Center

Spring is on its way. Prepare for the oncoming migrants with this crash course in warbler identification on April 7 at the Manomet Center. Over 25 species of warbler can be found during migration in the Northeast, each with their unique plumages, songs and habits. Build a bird house at the Manomet Center

Construct nesting boxes  while you learn about the birds that use them in a family program at the Manomet Center on April 9. Early April is the time to get nesting boxes up for returning cavity-nesting birds. Eastern Bluebirds, Tree Swallows and other popular species rely upon tree cavities and nesting boxes to raise their young every year. In this family program, participants learn which species nest in cavities and how to attract them. Then they will build their own nesting box as a family. Continue Reading →

Go owl prowling at Pinewoods Camp

The Manomet Center and the Wildlands Trust are hosting an Owl Prowl on Saturday, January 30 at 6:30 p.m.

Indian Brook third graders visit Manomet Center

The third graders of Indian Brook visited the Manomet Center for Environmental Studies. The students saw a brown creeper in one of the nets on the property and watched as the scientist carefully took the bird from the net and bagged it for tagging and release back into the wild. The scientists explained the tagging process, showing the importance of identifying trends in bird migration and populations, and brought out several birds to release in front of the students.
