Today, having our content in the cloud is more fashionable than ever. We got used to it, although then we saw moves like Google Photos that reduced the benefits. This got a lot of thought into creating a personal cloud, something possible using a NAS or inexpensively with an app like Syncthing.
Syncthing is an application that allows you to create a personal cloud and thus synchronize files between two or more computers in real time, safely away from prying eyes with the possibility of accessing from your mobile.
Transfer without third party
The advantage that Syncthing offers over other cloud-based systems is that it transfers data directly from one system to another. It offers, in theory, more security and privacy and is compatible with Linux, Windows, macOS and Android based systems, so we can use almost any computer to record content.
To improve security, communications are encrypted using TLS (Transport Layer Security). In addition, Syncthing has a powerful web graphical interface that allows you to add, delete and manage directories and folders which will then be the ones we synchronize between computers. And everything is done from one team to another, without a third party.
How to install and configure Syncthing
The first step is to download and install the tool from this webpage on the device we want to use, whether it is a Windows PC, Linux, macOS or an Android device. In this case, I installed it on a mobile, because at the moment it is not possible on a TV with Android TV, although the app can be installed.
Once Syncthing is installed, the browser we have set as default will open and the first step is to establish a username and password, which we can do if we click on “Settings” and then on ” Actions “and from the tabs we select the” GUI “section. The entire configuration process is carried out via the browser.
Other shallower options appear, so the next step we will see is the one that allows us to add devices. We see it on the main screen below the window with information about the connections. Three tabs appear, such as “Pause All”, “Recent Changes” and “Add Device” which we are going to click.
We can add devices in different ways. The first is by a QR code that each device has assigned, but here we need a camera. This is why the simplest process consists in adding the device closest to those which are connected or if you prefer, by marking the code by hand (chain of values which is assigned to each device).
The device in question will see how it appears that the computer wants to add it and we will only have to confirm the process to complete this step.
Once added, we have the option to customize the name, so it’s easier to identify each device by giving it a name.
With the device or devices added we can now establish the folders we want to share and this is something we can do again on the main screen but now in the left area if we click on the option “Add a file”.
Once the folder to be added has been marked, we must click on “Edit” and in this “Sharing” section, choose the device in the list with which we want to share it. Again we will see a notice on the PC or phone that we want to share said folder, which notice we have to accept. On this device, we need to select a path where the shared content will be stored and the process will be completed.
In all the devices that we want to sync the process is the same and in all of them we will have to allow connections and shared folders for the first time to maximize security.
This way, every time we add a file to the folders that we have configured, we get that it is synchronized with the connected devices without having to intervene in the process.
