Last June, the new electricity bill went into effect in Spain, a tariff model based on time slots that has caused many of us to rethink the daily use of our devices and electronic devices to try to save money. every day a few cents that they add up little by little. little a few euros at the end of the month.

As we discussed a few weeks ago, washing machines, refrigerators, ovens, air conditioning, radiators, dishwashers and ceramic hobs are our best allies in household chores and life, but also those which consume the most electricity. They are followed by TVs, IT equipment, network devices, mobiles, etc.

How to reduce expenses at the end of the month? Well, there are little things that you can do at home that after a few days or weeks of adaptation come out almost naturally. Next, I’ll tell you about my personal experience and seven simple steps we are already taking at home to save money with the new electric bill.

Laundry is done on weekends and at low temperature

The washing machine is responsible for around 7.3% of energy expenditure in households, with up to 80% of this figure related to heating the water for the washing process.

Until June at home, he played several times a week, without looking at what time we did. Now we have changed and put on laundry chores for the weekends when the cost of electricity is lowest.

We also select low temperature washing modes, where possible and the clothes are not heavily soiled. In addition, we set the revolutions of the machine to the lowest values our model allows us (between 500 and 600 rpm) and we choose to hang the clothes on the outside.

Cell phones, laptops and gadgets are recharged at midnight

It may seem a bit of a stretch to have to wait to charge the mobile at 00:00 at night as the power consumption and associated cost of any of these devices is very low, however, it is a good habit as long as we can do it and that there are many of us at home or that we have a swarm of hungry devices around us.

If you have to charge 4 or 5 cell phones every day, 3 laptops also daily, an occasional tablet and several wireless headphones every two or three days of use, in the end it can lead to a small saving each month if you do so. done in the hours of least consumption.

We start the dishwasher from midnight

The dishwasher is another appliance that consumes the most if you choose operating modes in which it has to heat the water a lot, especially above 60 degrees.

In my case, except for washing something specific that requires such a function, we always use the ECO mode and we have made a habit of leaving it ready at night and turning it on from 00:00. It’s not as loud as a washing machine, so it doesn’t bother as much while you do your job.

If you have a modern model that has a delayed start feature, you can leave it ready with the dishes and go to bed, it will start working on its own after the time you set it.

Turn off computers and devices at night

We’ve hooked up most of the room’s major picture, sound and internet equipment to a power strip, so we leave them all turned off overnight so they don’t waste.

It may seem low power, but as we saw a few days ago, leave routers, network equipment, NAS, WiFi amplifiers, etc. They represent a small big expense at the end of the month that adds to the total bill.

Here is a remark. If your TV is an OLED model, you cannot unplug it directly from the electricity, because when you turn it off from the remote control there are a few minutes left in the background, internal settings to keep the pixels in an optimal state. and avoid image retention.

Whenever I don’t use it, I put the PC in “sleep mode”

Computers before were slow computers that took forever to boot up and maybe that’s why I used to not turn it off when I wasn’t using it for a while. Later, they released the “hibernation” and “sleep” modes, the latter very useful for reducing consumption and having an almost instant start when turned on again.

Until now, I only used it if I was going to spend a lot of time with the computer without doing anything, for example going to eat or something similar. But now I have resumed the good habit of suspending the computer every time I leave the office for more than 5 minutes. If you have a desktop computer with a high electricity cost, your bill will thank you at the end of the month.

We take advantage of the residual heat from the oven

It is also useful to take advantage of the residual heat in the oven by turning it off a few minutes in advance. At home, we already use this heat to cook several dishes at the same time but also one after the other, avoiding having to reheat the oven from scratch.

Of course, we open the door as little as possible to avoid wasting heat and if the dish to prepare takes more than an hour, like a barbecue, we do not put it first to preheat and then we start to prepare the dishes. food, but we do it backwards so as not to waste energy for no reason.

We maintain a temperature of 25 degrees in the air conditioning

When you are hot and have an air conditioning unit, you may be tempted to set the temperature as low as possible so that the unit will allow you to cool the room as quickly as possible.

This consumes more energy than if you maintained a constant average temperature during the hours you are in the room. For example, in my case, we set it to 24-25 degrees most days and thus avoid excessive electricity consumption.

By setting the machine to values below 17 degrees (the minimum temperature of many models) when it is above 40 degrees, what you will get is not to cool the front room, but rather have the compressors run continuously at full power by trying to lower these additional degrees, without enjoying the advantages of inverter models (because it will be very difficult for them to reach it, and it can be maintained without operating the equipment) and with a higher electrical cost.
