The United States has 1,450 children hospitalized with Covid-19, the largest number ever recorded in the pandemic, warned Sunday (8) the director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH, its acronym in English), Francis Collins. Many of these young people, under the age of 12, have not yet been vaccinated against the disease.
In an interview with ACC News’ This Week, Collins said the country should never have reached the current point, with an increase in cases of the disease due to the delta variant of the Sars-CoV-2 coronavirus. “We have vaccines that we know are very effective and safe. However, half the country is still not fully immunized,” he complained.
Collins pointed out that the United States is paying “a terrible price” amid the rapid increase in cases, especially among unvaccinated people. “Almost all of the deaths are from unvaccinated people. Now it’s younger people, including children. We now have the highest number of children hospitalized with covid-19, 1,450,” he said. he commented.
While noting that there is “no hard data” to suggest that the delta variant is more serious for children, Collins admitted that he is aware of the concern of pediatricians because in this new peak in the illness “more children are hospitalized and are more seriously ill”.
