Gaming performance aspires to take a leap forward
The 2022 generation is the first to integrate the first Samsung processors equipped with its own GPU and developed by AMD: the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra embeds the Exynos 2200, a SoC that aims high, at least on paper. The higher graphics performance should show a noticeable improvement in running games, also in applications that require the power that AMD seems to give to the processor. It will have to be checked in the relevant analyses.
Beyond the Exynos 2200 expected with the AMD GPU, the most powerful and complete mobile of the new release raises the diagonal of its screen to 6.8 inches while maintaining an AMOLED panel with slightly curved edges. The soul of the Note family is implicit in this screen, also in another key element: the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra offers the S Note pencil as standard and inserted under the slab.
The screen has a variable refresh rate thanks to the LTPO panel used: this rate can fluctuate between 1-120 Hz depending on the applications used. The maximum resolution is QHD+, the contrast is very high and its brightness too: Samsung assures that the screen of the S22 Ultra reaches 1,750 nits of brightness. There is the sun and then the screen of this mobile.
Maximum RAM and storage at 12 GB and 1 TB; from the more than respectable 8/128 GB for the basic configuration. The mobile offers an ultrasonic fingerprint reader under the screen, it is equipped with a double rear speaker, NFC with Samsung Pay, it does not have a headphone jack and it has IP68 protection against dust and water.
Lots of cameras, lots of zoom and lots of megapixels
It was to be expected that the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra would include a lot of everything, especially in the photographic field, which is one of the areas that makes the biggest difference between the different phones. Our protagonist repeats with the rear quad configuration applying various improvements to image capture and video.
The main camera is again a 108 megapixel sensor with an f/1.8 aperture, 85º amplitude and Dual Pixel autofocus. The secondary sensor offers 12-megapixel images and a wide-angle lens with an f/2.2 aperture and 120º amplitude. Then, the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra incorporates two 10-megapixel telephoto lenses: one with 3x optical zoom and f/2.4 aperture; another with 10x zoom and f/4.9 aperture.
In front, the phone has a cutout on the AMOLED screen to accommodate a 40-megapixel sensor with an f/2.2 aperture and a width of 80º.
The mobile is capable of recording video in 8K, Samsung has increased the size of the main sensor by 23%, the autofocus detects and focuses on up to ten subjects at the same time, Samsung assures that it captures more information from the sensor and that it takes advantage of the capabilities of the pixel combination and the sensor itself to process sharper and brighter images. It will have to be checked in the analysis.
Zoom is again key for Samsung: the jump between telephoto lenses is done automatically up to 10x. From there, you can zoom into the scene up to 100x using hybrid zoom.
Loose battery and S Pen as distinctive detail
The mobile not being exactly small (not light either, two of its main drawbacks), Samsung took the opportunity to equip it with a 5,000 mAh battery. Fast charging takes a leap reaching a maximum of 45W with cable; retaining 15W for Qi wireless charging (it also offers reversible wireless charging). The charger is not included with the phone, you need to buy it separately.
The S Pen is one of the keys to the phone, this time included in a Samsung Galaxy S. The farewell to the Note makes the new Ultra grow in productivity-related possibilities. In addition, Samsung has improved the pen response with a latency of 3.8 ms and allows writing up to 88 languages.
In terms of software, the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra is updated to Android 12 and with One UI 4 layer. It offers a lot of its own apps, includes S Pen-related apps and will add an improved digital wallet with payments , identity document (identity card and Covid certificate) and keys. This portfolio will arrive in the second quarter of 2022.
