Podcasts, that is to say digital audio files accessible at any time, are in the process of securing a permanent place in the media. A new wave of settlement emerged from the first wave of experiences. In the meantime, podcasts have become part of the daily media repertoire of young users, but they are also slowly reaching older age groups, are the results of an in-depth scientific study on podcasts in Germany, which the Otto Foundation Brenner titled “Hit the right note: The podcast – Boom in Deutschland” released.

An assessment of the top 50 German podcasts from leading audio streaming platform Spotify showed that two-fifths of the most popular podcasts in Germany were about current affairs, politics and knowledge. It should also be noted that most news formats are characterized by their detail, their thematic depth and, last but not least, a high degree of diversity of opinion. “A new culture of conversation and listening has developed here, which can contribute to informing citizens and therefore to the formation of political opinions, especially among the youngest”, is convinced the author. Lutz Frühbrodt. Ideally, podcasting could lead to a new form of public political discourse, the communications expert said.
