A Pinehills woman is out almost $6,000 after falling for a phone scam, Friday.
According to Captain John Rogers, the 62-year-old victim was called by someone claiming to be from the IRS. She was allegedly threatened with jail time if she didn’t pay the back taxes she was accused of owing. She was directed to pay using gift cards, which she purchased at Best Buy, Rogers said.
The police department reminds people that the IRS will never call regarding back taxes and does not accept payment using gift cards.
