Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station will begin moving spent fuel into dry cask storage this month.
In a press release, the company announced it would begin loading three casks in a process that would be finished by the end of January. “Moving spent fuel into dry cask storage is needed to maintain sufficient room in the spent fuel pools to conduct refueling operations as needed,” the statement announced. In December, 2013 PNPS Regulatory Affairs Director David Noyes said the plant’s spent fuel pool was at 80 percent capacity.
In presentations to town officials, company officials have said they plan to load three casks with spent fuel every 24 months.
