Berlin (dpa) – Chinese pianist Lang Lang is honored for his recording of the Goldberg Variations with a classical opus. It won the title in the bestseller of the year category, as the organizers announced on Thursday. Among the 48 winners are Bulgarian soprano Sonya Yoncheva (Singer of the year) and Polish tenor Piotr Beczala (Singer of the year). Egyptian soprano Fatma Said won the Young Artist of the Year award. Conductor Marc Albrecht and composer Olga Neuwirth are also in the spotlight. The gala with many stars from the classical world on October 10 at the Konzerthaus in Berlin will be broadcast on ZDF (10:15 p.m.).

Lang Lang explained that Johann Sebastian Bach’s Goldberg Variations had accompanied him from an early age. “It was the dream of my life to take her someday.” The 39-year-old was seen sitting in the car during the online press conference. He raves about the work on the baroque work, which brings him to the studio in Berlin and to the Thomaskirche in Leipzig, Bach’s workplace. In Leipzig, one had the impression that Bach was listening to him and that he was still alive. It was magical.

The presenter of the gala is Désirée Nosbusch. The award, which has been awarded for the fourth time, was created as part of the abolition of the Echo Awards by record companies, concert promoters and music publishers in the classical music industry. The Tiktok video platform, which will broadcast a chamber music concert on October 9, is a new media partner.
