Erich Maria Remarque’s anti-war novel “Nothing New in the West” has already been filmed twice in the United States. A remake from director Edward Berger will soon be available on Netflix.

Netflix is working on a remake of the classic war movie ‘Nothing New in the West’. Actor Felix Kammerer from the Vienna Burgtheater can be seen in the lead role.

Other roles include Albrecht Schuch, Daniel Brühl and Devid Striesow. The film is set to be released in 2022. The streaming service announced this on Tuesday during the online press conference for Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

The anti-war novel “Nothing New in the West” by Erich Maria Remarque describes the experiences of German frontline soldier Paul on the Western Front during World War I. Euphoric at first, Paul and his friends desperately fight for their lives in the trenches. The story was filmed twice in the United States, in 1930 and 1979. Lewis Milestone’s 1930 version won two Oscars.

Directed by Edward Berger (“Germany 83”). About the project, he said, “Of course, we rarely get the chance to make a film like this from Germany.” He always sees great American or British war films. “And one thing always bothers me: it bothers me that there is always a winner. There is always a good guy. Of course, they have a completely different story from ours. They won. The Americans had to intervene in the war against their will and liberated Europe. And from this story there are heroes. They don’t exist in Germany.”

Berger now sees this as an opportunity: “And to make a film of this feeling, this shame, this grief, this horror that we grew up with, which I inherited, which my children will inherit, I found of a film an interesting way of seeing the world.”

The shoot was extremely demanding, says Berger. He deliberately used long tracking shots close to people. But there were also other difficult factors: “There should be a lot of fog, with the filming having to be done safely, with explosions going up left and right. Then a tank rushes towards us. Everything Suddenly, 300 extras are running, all cold and wet.” Even the weapons sometimes broke down. They are original and 100 years old. “Sometimes they don’t work.” (dpa)
