The Locarno Film Festival audiences clearly have favorites for the next awards ceremony. German filmmakers also have opportunities. But juries like to decide in surprising ways.

Locarno (dpa) – This Saturday 14 August, the 74th Locarno International Film Festival, on the Swiss shore of Lake Maggiore, ends with the presentation of the Golden Leopard and other prizes. German producers and filmmakers can hope for one or even several distinctions.

In the main competition, the satire “Nebesa” (“Appearance deceives”) by Serbian director Srđan Dragojević (“Parade”), co-directed by German producers, is considered the most promising contender for the main prize. The film reflects the recent history of Eastern Europe in a very original way.

“The revenge is mine, everyone else pays cash” is also very popular. In contemporary painting, also co-produced by German financiers, Indonesian director Edwin (“The Night of the Giraffe”) explores the history of his homeland. There are also opportunities for the social study “Gerda” by Russian director Natalya Kudryashova (“The Pioneer Heroes”).

One of the Outstanding Acting Awards could also go to Germany. Franz Rogowski (“Ondine”) is the big favorite of men in the role of a childish adult in the Austrian tragedy “Lucifer” (director: Peter Brunner). Its strongest competitor is Hollywood star Ethan Hawke in the political thriller “Zeros and Ones” by former American director Abel Ferrara (“Bad Lieutenant”).

As for women, two French women can hope for more than anyone: Jade Springer, hitherto unknown in the role of the 13-year-old heroine in “Petite Solange” and Sabine Azéma (“Hearts”), famous in her country actress of character, in the history painting “The Place of another”.

In the competition for young talents “Cineasti del presente” (“Filmmakers of the present”), the film adaptation of the novel “Nobody is with the calves” by the German-Iranian author and director Sabrina Sarabi was the big favorite. . However, the same is true in Locarno: juries often make very different decisions than the public expects. So the tension is great. All prizes will be presented on Saturday evening at an outdoor gala.
