Two days ago, we saw how to control the electrical energy that we consume in real time from home and thus avoid fears about the electricity bill. But alongside responsible consumption, we can also minimize the impact on the pocket by reducing the contracted power if we see that it is not necessary for us. And we can easily see the power of the Internet.

In the same way that we can access the electricity consumption in real time via the Internet, we can know graphically and very visually the evolution of this part of what we consume from month to month. This way we can check if we are too far from the subscribed power and, as this section is a fixed which varies depending on whether it is higher or lower, we can adjust this power to our real need.

Internet, the ally to save on the bill

Electricity is one of the concepts for which we have to pay an amount on the electricity bill. It is an amount which is always present, but which increases or decreases according to the greater or lesser power that we have contracted.

As they specify from the page of the Ministry of Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, the power term “is a flat rate which is calculated by multiplying the subscribed power, by the days included in the bill and by the power term of the PVPC. price that the Ministry of Energy, Tourism and the Digital Agenda sets ”.

When we contract our tariff with the distributor, we establish an approximate power which allows us to have a series of devices connected at the same time without having power cuts.

Imagine that we are going to have a washing machine, an oven and a vitro functioning at the same time … elements to which we add other fixed elements such as refrigerator, air conditioning, lighting, television … according to the consumption of each one of them we make a simple count and we engage a certain power.

The term power is a fixed term that must be paid even if no electricity consumption is made and that is why it is important to adjust it to the actual consumption. The less electricity I contract, the less I spend each month. This figure that appears on our invoice, normally in the Contract data or invoice detail section, is the result of the price paid for the power and multiplied by the amount of kW contracted.

In this sense, it is possible to lower the subscribed power, but taking into account the fact that we will have less kW and we must warn that it is important not to fall below so as not to remain “at two candles” at the most inopportune moment. In addition, the distributor only allows one power change per year, so you have to pay close attention to the numbers.

If we decide to lower the power, the change is immediately reflected in our bill. A change that can mean a saving of around 5 euros per month per section lowered (we will see later that there are sections) which translates into around 60 euros per year.

Adjust the subscribed power via the web and the app

For this reason and the same as we have seen when it comes to knowing the consumption in real time, we can adjust the wattage. The same website of the distributor offers information in the form of history on the power that we have spent month by month as a cap.

This is a section that may vary depending on the distributor we have contracted. In my case it is Endesa, it is the section “Consult the maximum power requested”. At this point, it offers information in the form of a graph with the highest wattage that we requested each month.

In my case, I contracted 4,600 kW and the graph shows how the maximum requested value was 3976 kW on 02/16/2021 at 4:45 p.m. If I wanted to save a few euros, it would be enough to adjust the power that I contracted.

It must be taken into account that the subscribed power can be increased or decreased by multiples of 0.1 kW and depending on the rise or fall, the section will be changed or not. In addition, and as detailed on the Endesa website, your distribution company will charge fixed amounts for the process:

About 11 euros to lower the power under the concept of “coupling rights” and it doesn’t matter how much power is lowered. About 45 euros for each kW you increase power under the concept of “extension and access rights”, and like the previous one, this will be reflected in the next invoice. Depending on your distributor, they may charge you for other procedures or deposits.

These same calculations can be performed with the appropriate mobile application of each distributor. The interface can change from one to the other, but as you can see that doesn’t represent much difficulty since the search terms leave no room for doubt.

As in the case of the web version, we can define the dates on which we want it to show us the consumption made. The margin by which we move will be higher or lower depending on when we registered the contract.

The data you will need to know

In this sense, the Government has published to the BOE a list with the standardized powers, the above-mentioned sections. Dated 2006, they are still valid in 2021, but if we have not made any changes to the installation and there is already time, our house will still be governed by the old sections.

The normal thing, if you decide to lower the contract power, is for the distributor to ask for a series of documents which must be in hand.

Data to increase or decrease the subscribed power: Name, first name and identifier of the contract holder. Current electric power. New power supply. Universal Point of Supply Code (CUPS). Electric bulletin.

When it comes to hiring wattage, the usual thing in most homes is for it to be around 3.45kW minimum in order to keep the ICP from easily jumping. The minimum power is usually 2.3 kW and the maximum power is between 10 kW and 15 kW. The most common are 2.3 kW, 3.4 kW, 4.6 kW and 5.75 kW.
