How to change the layout of Windows 10 taskbar icons without third-party apps

One of the options that most appeals to PC, and display gadget users in general, is the ability to customize, and in Windows the options, without resorting to third-party applications, are enormous. We can change the themes, wallpapers and also the appearance of icons in the “Taskbar”.

We can use several types of icons in the “Taskbar” so that the same application can present different designs according to the chosen configuration. And that’s what we’ll see in this tutorial: where the options are hidden and which are available.

Minimalist design or retro look

We can choose between different ways to display the application icons that we have opened in the “Taskbar” of Windows 10. From a more minimalist design to a more crude design reminiscent of the past of Windows.

To be able to access the different options, the easiest way is to right-click on the empty area of the “Taskbar” which is to the right of the applications that we have opened. Another method is to go to the “Settings” menu and find the “Personalization” section, but the first method is faster.

By clicking on the “Taskbar” we will see how the different options appear. One of them is the one that allows you to minimize the size of the icons. Just turn on the “Use small taskbar buttons” switch and these are minimized.

Another option to optimize space is “Show badges in the taskbar”. This option is the one that allows you to disable the indicators of the number of notifications that appear next to the icon. This way, we won’t see how many notifications we have pending in each open app.

But the option that allows a more global change is the one that appears in the “Personalization” section. We will need to click on the text titled “Combine taskbar buttons” to open a drop-down list with three different options.

Depending on the aesthetic that interests us the most, we can choose one or the other option, taking into account that we can undo the changes at any time:

Always hide labels: with this option you have access to a minimalist design, especially if you use the small icons. With this design, the icons of open apps will not display names and if, for example, we have multiple windows open, they will be grouped together. It is ideal for small screens due to the little space it requires. When the taskbar is full: in this case, the icons of open applications show the name in a coarser box and will also be grouped only if they fill all the space in the “Taskbar”. Never: Finally, this option allows all icons to display the name and never be grouped together. A design option that shows an appearance of the icons similar to that used in previous versions of the operating system, Windows 7 and earlier.

As we can see, it is a question of taking advantage of the options offered by Windows 10 and of not having recourse to third-party applications to be able to modify the design proposed by the “Taskbar”.

Edit icons

We can also customize the icon of each of the applications that we have in the bar and the previous step is to change the shortcut icon that is on the desktop.

To do this, just click with the right mouse or trackpad button on the one you want to modify. We will see a window with several options and we choose “Modify icon” in the “Shortcut” tab. With the search engine, you have to find a file on the hard disk with the extension .ICO, since PNG, JPG, SVG, etc. files do not work. However, these can be converted to .ICO format with many web pages

With the icon already modified, all that remains is to drag it to the “Taskbar”, keeping in mind that if you modify an icon already pinned, you will have to remove it from the bar and re-add it. -pin for changes to take effect.
