In the new update, more tools are coming to Google Maps for Android to help us navigate and explore our surroundings, especially for people who use public transport.

The influx of public transport

A few years ago, Google Maps started showing the influx of passengers on public transport, a feature that with the pandemic the company has been steadily improving to help passengers maintain a safe distance.

Traffic forecasts are already available at more than 10,000 metro, bus and train agencies in 100 countries, including the most popular cities in Spain.

When calculating a route, we can see how congested each line is, in order to choose the time or the metro with less people. The prediction will tell us how busy this stop is typically at every hour of the day. In addition, with the option ‘Number of people’ we can tell Google Maps if there were a lot of people in the metro, three or the bus we had taken.

In New York and Sydney, the Google Maps team is testing public transport concurrency in real time. In the future, they will extend this new functionality to more cities.

New stats for your timeline

In order for us to be aware of how we spend our time, Google Maps activates the new timeline stats to everyone. In this new section, you can see how you get around and how much time you spend in different places, such as shops, restaurants, airports, etc.

Remember your past travels

In the timeline, Google Maps also launches the new Trips tab for all users, which allows us to remember all the trips we have taken, looking at each of the sites we have visited.

More detailed reviews

Finally, and for the moment only available in the United States, there are new, more detailed reviews where in addition to your rating you can share other useful information in an easy way such as price ranges, if you have received any food to arrive, home delivery, etc. This novelty will soon arrive in the rest of the countries.
