Jacques Offenbach’s “Hoffmanns Erzählungen” read by director Daniele Finzi Pasca premiered at the Hamburg State Opera. Like a festival of poetry and colors, fantasy and humor.
Hamburg (AP) – After a year full of uncertainties linked to the pandemic, the Hamburg State Opera gave a sign of hope at the start of the 2021/22 season: Jacques Offenbach celebrated “Les Contes d ‘ Hoffmann “(” Les Contes d’Hoffmann “) on Saturday Reading by director Daniele Finzi Pasca premiere. A festival of poetry and colors, fantasy and discreet-absurd humor, the show was greeted with cheers from the audience.
The main character of the five-act work is modeled on the romantic poet ETA Hoffmann. However, in Offenbach’s “Fantastic Opera”, he is uncovered, devoted to alcohol and his infatuation with women. He doesn’t even notice his cheering audience laughing at him. This is how reality and imagination merge inseparably in his stories.
Finzi Pasca sums up this funny and yet elegantly grounded mess in images as light as a feather. Doppelgangers float on the stage, singer Antonia has butterfly wings, and Olympia doll, standing on a giant music box, spins around. Soprano Olga Peretyatko shines in the role of virtuoso as well as in the roles of the other three revered, which she also plays. The tenor Benjamin Bernheim succeeds in painting a moving and vocally very different portrait of Hoffmann. The many roles are excellently interpreted, the choir masters with ease the challenges of spatial distances, and the Philharmonic State Orchestra conducted by Kent Nagano, with its nuanced and flexible playing, despite all the melodic happiness, always leaves room for moments of deep gravity. in Offenbach’s score.
