Athens (AP) – The coffin of late Greek composer Mikis Theodorakis is to be placed in Athens Cathedral so that people can say goodbye. The semi-official Greek news agency ANA reported on Friday.
Starting Tuesday, citizens will be able to visit the mourning site the day before a funeral mass which will take place on Thursday afternoon at the end.
It was not yet known where Mikis Theodorakis would ultimately be buried; he himself had expressed in writing the wish to be buried in a suburb of the city of Chania in Crete, where his family’s grave is also located. According to media reports, however, his final resting place could also be in the Peloponnese Peninsula.
Mikis Theodorakis died Thursday in Athens at the age of 96. The composer and former resistance fighter is revered as a folk hero in Greece and has millions of fans around the world.
