One of the disadvantages of Chromecast with Google TV is the low storage capacity it offers. A disadvantage that becomes evident when we see how it does not allow installing applications having the capacity to the limit. Something we can fix without having to spend a single euro.

We have already seen rumors pointing to the arrival of a new Chromecast, more powerful, compatible with the AV1 codec and with more storage. In the meantime, here are the steps I took to extend the capability of the Chromecast with Google TV with accessories I have at home.

Almost unlimited memory

The Chromecast with Google TV only has a ridiculous 8 gigabytes of capacity to install apps, add-ons, and to store media content. Very little space that soon makes us see the notice that tells us that we must delete to install a new application.

I managed to increase the storage capacity without spending a single euro, just by searching among the pots we have at home. A way that allows you to go from the initial 8 GB to a much larger size.

To achieve this, here’s what I used: a Chromecast with Google TV (obviously), a memory card or flash drive and a HUB with power input, USB output (it doesn’t matter if it’s USB type A, B or C) and input for memory cards or USB in which to connect the USB key. That’s what I did.

I connected the Chromecast’s power supply to the HUB, a hub to which before plugging in I connected the flash drive or memory card (I like the card better because it’s better integrated).

From the HUB, I take out a cable to the Chromecast, which will be the one transmitting power and data. In this case the cable is already carried by the hub. I have verified that the Chromecast turns on correctly so I can continue.

Once in the initial screen of the Chromecast, I accessed the “Settings”, by clicking on the image of the profile, at the top right. There are several options and among all of them you need to click on “Settings”, which appears in the left area of the new panel.

This is to access the “System” options which I searched through and clicked on “Storage”.

In the right part of the screen now appears, next to the internal storage of the Chromecast, the one I added, in this case 32 GB by means of a memory card.

When you click on this section, two options appear: “Eject” and “Erase and format as a storage device”. You must click on the latter option, taking into account that all data stored in the device will be erased. In order not to lose them, it is necessary to first make a backup copy on your PC or mobile phone.

It is now a question of creating a unique memory. A single memory that expands the Chromecast’s 8GB plus the GBs I added to add a total of 40GB. From there data is moved from the internal memory to the new memory installed in Clicking “Migrate data to this storage”.

In this way I have unified the two memories as if they were only one and I have for example more space to install applications. In case you want to expand the memory just to add media to play from the Chromecast, all these steps are not necessary. It is enough to install a file explorer (I use File Commander) and from there read the data stored in the additional memory.
