Leipzig. Former Thomaskantor Georg Christoph Biller has passed away, as his family announced, he died on Thursday after a long and serious illness at the age of 66.

Born September 20, 1955 as the son of a pastor in Nebra, Biller received his early musical training from 1965 to 1974 as a Thomaner. As a choir prefect, he then acquired his first experiences in conducting. After graduating from the Thomasschule in Leipzig in 1974, he studied conducting with Rolf Reuter and Kurt Masur from 1976 to 1981, as well as singing at the “Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy” University of Music and Theater in Leipzig.

Biller became choirmaster of the Gewandhaus Leipzig in 1980 and taught choir conducting at the parish music school in Halle. In 1992 he was appointed Thomaskantor and led the Thomanerchor as the sixteenth Thomaskantor after Johann Sebastian Bach until 2015. (fp)
