It is not easy to innovate in telephony and, when you succeed, it does not always work. In Android, manufacturers experiment quite a bit, and sometimes even things that go well don’t end up coming to fruition. There are many technologies that we have benefited from for generations and then disappeared.

We have compiled some of these solutions which were pretty cool and for no apparent reason ended up disappearing and not penetrating the Android market. Let’s do a little review to see how we missed some useful solutions.

pop up cameras

They have their detractors, but the pop-up cameras were a great idea to bring us closer to a notch-free future. Its useful life has extended beyond the years we will have a phone. In fact, I know quite a few users of this type of camera and they work perfectly.

The main issue was their maintenance, as dust couldn’t get into them, and the cost of implementing this type of mechanical solution in a cheap phone. We have not seen this type of mechanism, and some of us will regret it.

3D facial recognition systems

To date, only Apple has managed to create a facial recognition system that has been around for several years, Face ID. What is curious is that there have been few manufacturers who have had similar technology, but none have maintained it. The Xiaomi Mi 8 had a notch that practically mirrored Apple’s, the Google Pixel 4 XL too, and those technologies have not reappeared.

Currently a 2D unlocking system is used using our phone’s camera, a less secure and efficient system than what we had a few years ago, a great loss.

modular mobiles

LG tried it with the G5 and Google put honey on our lips with the ARA project. The idea of a mobile to which we can change the parts of the phone to fight against obsolescence. None of these projects came to fruition, another bucket of cold water in a solution that could have changed the future of telephony.

Samsung’s Instagram Mode

With the Samsung Galaxy S10, Instagram mode has arrived, a great idea to put an end to the poor quality of social networks that Android drags to this day. In the latest generations of Galaxy, there is no trace of this solution, which did not really end the problem, but paved the way for uploading better photos and videos to the networks.

Self-repairing mobiles

The LG G Flex had the first solution to fix your rear bike yourself. This was achieved through a poly-resin that automatically expanded to cover small scratches in seconds. It’s not a solution for big bumps, but it is for small daily messes.

Ingenious and useful solutions that, unfortunately, fell through. We would like to know if you are missing more or what technologies from a few years ago you would like to see again.
