Chinese authorities have arrested 60 Tibetans for possessing photographs of their spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama. The operation was carried out in the city of Dej Wonpo in Kardaj. A Tibetan living in India said police had detained 19 beggars from a local monastery in the Tibet Autonomous Region. Another 40 people were arrested during the search of the houses carried out by the administration.

The move comes at a time when Beijing has stepped up its campaign to punish Tibetans for possessing all banned photographs, including those of the Dalai Lama. All those arrested are reportedly being held at the Sershall County Police Station.

In addition to the arrest, the authorities also held a meeting in the area threatening people not to keep photographs of the Dalai Lama and not to share any information about him on their mobile phones.

2 students arrested for opposing making Chinese language compulsory

Chinese authorities have arrested 19-year-old Tibetan students for opposing Beijing’s plan to make China the only medium of instruction in schools. Chinese President Xi Jinping’s plan is being seen as an exercise to tighten his grip on the Tibet Autonomous Region.

It is learned that both Guldrak and Yangrik students were talking on social media about the scheme, which is in force since September. Both are being kept at the Darlag County Police Station.
