The cancellation came just five days before the premiere: Günther Groissböck was to play the role of Wotan, the father of the gods, at the Bayreuth Festival. Now there is a short term replacement.
Bayreuth (dpa) – The Bayreuth Festival has found a new Wotan: Tomasz Konieczny will take on the role of the father of the gods in “Walküre” this year.
He replaces Günther Groissböck, who canceled on Saturday morning – just five days before the premiere on July 29. The festival announced it on its homepage: “The festival management would like to thank Mr. Konieczny very much for the short-term recovery! Konieczny made his Bayreuth debut in 2018 as Friedrich von Telramund in “Lohengrin”.
Festival director Katharina Wagner justified Groissböck’s rejection on Saturday as follows: “He wants to offer the best quality here in Bayreuth and due to Corona’s long break he cannot guarantee that.” It is still unclear who will sing the role of Wotan in the new production “Ring des Nibelungen” in the coming year. Groissböck also canceled this.
