Tire recycling: sustainable practices for discarding old tires

Taking care of the planet has been at the forefront of everyone’s minds for a while now. We are taking more time to think about what we use and how we can make our belongings last longer.

One way we can do this is through recycling. We know how to recycle our garbage, but what about other items that we use? Items such as car tires are difficult to know what to do with when we can no longer use them.

That’s why we’ve put together some ideas for what you can do with tires that are no longer useful on your car.

How to recycle old tires

  • Turn them into something new

The best thing to do with your old tires is to turn them into something new. We’re too quick to throw things away when we no longer need them. But there are lots of ways we can reuse old items if we try.

One great use for old tires is to use them in the garden. They make excellent plant pots as they are sturdy against all kinds of weather – even when they’re too worn to use on a car. You can stack a few of them together and use them to repot some old plants or to grow something new.

If you’re short on space, you can even turn your vogue tires into hanging planters. You can use the inside of the tire for small plants and hang it on your wall or garden fence.

There are other creative ways you can reuse old tires if you’re up for a bit more of a challenge. Due to their sturdiness and ability to deal with all weathers, tires are great for making chairs out of.

There are so many tutorials out there that can help you achieve this. It might not be for you if you’ve only got one tire to use, but you can store it away until you have enough to build something cool with.

If you have one that you’re desperate to use, why not turn it into a footstool? It’s a much simpler project and could be a great place to start your upcycling journey. All you need is some superglue and a material of your choice and you’re good to go.

You can even get the kids involved so they can learn how to build something new out of something old. They can even carry on the tradition when they’re old enough to have their own cars.

  • Look for local recycling centre

If you’re not up for doing DIY or don’t have the time, you can also recycle your old tires. There are car garages that will take them and recycle them – or they might even know someone who is using them for their own DIY project.

There might be a recycling centre nearby that takes in old and used items. Or you might be lucky enough to find a recycling centre that takes in anything and everything.

  • Ask your local community

If you don’t know of any kind of recycling centre in your local area, you could try looking on social media. There might be a community group on social media where you can ask for advice from other people.

Social media is a great way to find out more about your local community and what’s available. There might be someone who is looking for old tires for a project of their own. There might even be a school or community centre group who are looking for items to use in an upcycling project.

You never know who or what you might find right on your front door. You just need to take a little bit of time to find out. Not only can you do something good by recycling your tires, but you might also find some fun new people or groups in your community.

Now you’ve got some ideas for your old car tires, which one are you going to try?
