Argentine President Alberto Fernández admitted on Friday that it was a mistake to organize a birthday party at the Presidential Residence in Olivos last year, in full health lockdown due to the Covid-19 pandemic .

Fernández said first lady Fabiola Yañez called friends for “a toast” on July 14, 2020, on her birthday, as Argentina was under a presidential decree with severe health restrictions due of Covid-19, including the ban on social gatherings.

The leak of photos from the commemoration has sparked a scandal in the country and a backlash from the opposition, which intends to bring Fernández to a political trial. The images, published this Friday on the front pages of Argentina’s main newspapers, show several people, including Fernández, during the meeting at the presidential residence in Olivos, on the outskirts of Buenos Aires.

“I realize that it shouldn’t have been done,” Fernández admitted. “I’m sorry that happened,” he added, promising that what happened is something that “won’t happen again”.
