For a long time, it was not clear whether festival regular Angela Merkel would come to the opening. But the Chancellor remains loyal to Bayreuth.
Bayreuth (dpa) – Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) comes to Bayreuth for the festival during the last year of her mandate. The city of Bayreuth announced that it was one of the first guests this Sunday, July 25.
After last year’s cancellation, the opera festival now begins with a new production of the work “The Flying Dutchman”. For a long time, it was not known whether Merkel would attend the festival this year. Due to distance regulations, far fewer spectators than usual are allowed into the house.
Angela Merkel is a Wagner fan
Merkel and her husband Joachim Sauer have been regulars at Green Hill in Bayreuth for many years. Most of the time, the couple didn’t stop at the opening production, but also watched Wagner’s operas at the Festspielhaus a few days later.
Bavarian Prime Minister Markus Söder (CSU) will also visit Bayreuth on Sunday, accompanied by numerous ministers from his cabinet. Guests at the premiere also include Prime Minister of Saxony Michael Kretschmer and his colleague Tobias Hans from Saarland (both CDU).
High-profile guests outside of politics are Gloria von Thurn und Taxis, actor Francis Fulton-Smith (“Dr. Kleist”) and cabaret artist Michl Müller. The opening of the festival is likely to be much more subdued than usual due to the corona restrictions: The red carpet remains in the depot, there is also no state reception. The square in front of the Festspielhaus will be closed to onlookers.
