One of the features that was lost with the launch of Android 12 was the Chromecast’s volume control due to a “legal issue”. It was no longer possible to adjust the volume from the mobile’s own volume controls and buttons, but surprisingly that changed in the January version of Android 12.
Yesterday, the January security patch started arriving on Pixels, and in addition to fixing the serious error in emergency calls, it also enabled Chromecast volume control on its devices.
Google Cast’s volume control returns to Android 12
Compatibility with Chromecast volume control has been disabled in Android 12 Beta 3, and so far this feature has been disabled according to Google due to a “legal issue”, possibly due to a lawsuit filed by Sonos . The company announced last November that it was still working on providing an alternative, but doubted that it would reach Android 12. Everything suggested that we were going to have to wait for Android 12L, but finally Google found the solution with Android. 12.
Surprise! Streaming volume controls have been re-enabled with the January 2022 update for Pixel. Google has solved its legal problem where this new method allows you to control broadcast volume in a way that does not infringe the patent.

Now, starting with the Pixel 3a, the Chromecast’s volume control is regained, with which its users will once again be able to control their TV’s volume from their device’s volume buttons without having to use the Google Home app. The security patch is now available from Pixel 3a to Pixel 5a. In the Pixel 6, the patch will arrive in the next few days.
What remains a mystery is how Google managed to solve this “legal problem”. It is not known if they have reached an agreement with Sonos or if Google has found an alternative to implement this feature without infringing the Sonos patent. It’s also unclear whether support for Chromecast volume control will reach all Android 12 phones when they are updated with the January security patch or later.
